Does Weight Increases after Caeserean Delivery?

There is a popular misbelief that those mothers who deliver by cesarean delivery tends to excessive weight leading to obesity. But, it is not true.

Pathophysiology of weight gain follows simple arithmetic rule.

“Profit/ Loss = Difference between Credit and Debit.”

If we are not burning the calories by physical exercies, that we have consumed through our diet, we would gain weight.

Since, in India, there is a prevailing practice that the mothers after delivery especially after cesarean section delivery are not allowed to do any work out. On the contrary they are advised to restrict themselves to one room with complete rest and are given high calorie diet to meet with the increased demands of lactation.

So there is no reason that there would not be any weight gain. But, this weight gain in because of difference in calorie intake and expenditure and not because of cesarean section per se.

Tips to avoid post partum weight gain:

  • Do regular exercises and work out under supervision.
  • Daily 1-2 km to walk. In consultation with your doctor, start it as early as possible.
  • Eat frequent small meals at regular intervals. Do not starve long.
  • Take high protein nutritious and balanced diet.
  • Restrict high calorie diet. In olden days since the females did not get the due care and respect that they deserved, and they were forced to eat the left over food, our Ancestors proposed to feed them with high calorie diet in order to meet the increased calorie demands of lactation. However, in present era, with increased awareness and women empowerment, these proposals no more hold true.
