Your baby is 6 weeks old – Hurrah! The baby’s heart has started beating!

Your baby’s heart beat has begun and can be well marked in ultrasonography. It is the first organ to function and confirms the life.

Even though the heart is simply a tube at this stage and beats @ 100 beats per minute, soon it would take a structure of adult heart and beat @ 110-160 bpm.

The cell of three germ layers continue to grow and differentiate into various organs.

  • The outer ectodermal layer will soon form your baby’s brain, nerve tissue, skin and its appendages.
  • The middle mesodermal layer would form heart muscles, connective tissue including muscles and bones, kidneys, walls of gastro-intestinal tract, blood cells etc.
  • The inner endodermal layer would form inner lining of its heart, blood vessels, lungs, genitals, intestinal tract and hormone producing glands etc.
  • The upper and lower limb buds starts projecting from the body.

You may often wonder, why your Doctor has advised you an ultrasound so early in your pregnancy, but it has its significance.

  • Location Scan: It determines the location of the developing fetus. Its normal position is Intrauterine cavity. If it implants outside the cavity, it is called as Ectopic Pregnancy and is a life threatening condition. It needs urgent action.
  • Number of Fetuses: Presence of multiple gestational sac suggest multi fetal pregnancy and appearance of their connecting membranes and placenta may indicate the nature of twinning.
  • Dating Scan: The expected date of delivery can also be estimated by the Crown Rump Length (CRL) measurement within the range of +/- 4 days.
  • Viability Scan: The presence of fetal heart beat is the most accurate sign of fetal viability.
  • Presence of any abnormality in uterus that can adversely affect the developing fetus can be noted.

The ultrasonography is absolutely safe and do not harm the baby.

  • If your baby’s heart beat could not be localized, Don’t Panic. It may be a delayed conception and your Doctor may call you again for a repeat USG to confirm fetal viability. At this time the turgosity of gestational sac, presence of fetal pole and appearance of a good yolk sac should reassure you and your doctor.

You may experience Morning Sickness and Vomiting. The most common cause of it is the rising levels of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone in your blood. However, the nature would have designed it so that you do not consume any harmful food that can adversely affect the baby.
